Melin Hats Hyrdo - Pretty Sweet Hat
The Gospel Underground Mission
The Gospel Underground Exists to Advance the Mission of God in the Borderlands between the Church and Culture.
What We Do
We Support and Strengthen churches, Share Good News with the Coming Generation, and Thoughtfully Engage the Culture with the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
Guiding Philosophies and Postures
Thoughtful and Respectful Engagement. As we seek to impact people in the borderlands between the church and culture we desire to think deeply about life, faith and the ideas of the world while engaging them with kindness and civility. (1 Peter 3:15, Colossians 4:2-6)
Underground, Behind the Scenes Ministry. We do not desire to be center stage in life and mission but to joyfully and intentionally serve in a behind the scenes fashion. If we can be the most impactful and influential people that no one has ever heard about, we will be grateful for this post in the Kingdom. (John 3:30; Philippians 2:1-11)
Rooting and Establishing. Deep roots grow movements and strong foundations stand the test of time. We desire to see men, marriages, families and churches rooted and established in both love and truth to influence generations to come. (Colossians 2:6, 7; 1 Peter 2:1-12; Psalm 145:1-7; Timothy 5:1, 2, Ephesians 5-6)
Mentoring and Coaching. Our hope is to invest in others who are on the front lines of gospel mission with mentoring and coaching. We desire to be “player coaches” who come along side those who seek to impact and influence others for Jesus Christ. (2 Timothy 2:1-7; 1 Corinthians 11:1; Matthew 28:18-20)
The Primacy of Families and the Local Church. We believe that local churches, communities living out the mission of Jesus, are the primary center for Kingdom work and expansion. As such we value local church authority and investing our lives to strengthen churches and support her mission and ministry. (Acts 16; Ephesians 2; 1 Timothy 3)

“Our program philosophy is nothing complex, but it certainly is something we are proud of. We want our kids to live a focused, disciplined and consistent lifestyle both in and out of the wrestling room. What this means is that we expect them to develop a way of life while they are here, not just a set of improved wrestling skills. That said, our goals on the mat are extremely high. We want NCAA Champions and ACC Champions, but not at the expense of the student-athletes’ personal development.” – Steve Garland, head coach

So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love. - 1 Corinthians 13:13
8 But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, having put on the breastplate of faith and love, and for a helmet the hope of salvation. 9 For God has not destined us for wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, 10 who died for us so that whether we are awake or asleep we might live with him. 11 Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing. - 1 Thessalonians 5:8-11
24 "Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. 26 And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. 27 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it." - Matthew 7:24-27
“He who testifies to these things says, ‘Surely I am coming soon.’ Amen. Come, Lord Jesus!” Revelation 22:20
9 Pray then like this: "Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. 10 Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. - Matthew 6:9-10
14 Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them.15 Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep.16 Live in harmony with one another. Do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly. Never be wise in your own sight.17 Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all.18 If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. 19 Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, "Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord." 20 To the contrary, "if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head." 21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. - Romans 12:14-21
Quotations
The Nicene Creed ends this way: We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen."
Gandalf! I thought you were dead! But then I thought I was dead myself. Is everything sad going to come untrue? What's happened to the world?"
A great Shadow has departed," said Gandalf, and then he laughed and the sound was like music, or like water in a parched land; and as he listened the thought came to Sam that he had not heard laughter, the pure sound of merriment, for days upon days without count.”
― J.R.R. Tolkien, The Return of the King

We have found our faith in the keeping power of God in flames and trials. Our faith, which holds, is born in the fire. All of us who have won are winning our faith in the fires, which have swept our lives. Those fires that scorch our inmost souls and sear our noblest dreams can declare that we know no other strength but that strength which is from above.
Taylor and Taylor, Faith in the Fire : Wisdom for Life, 210
Love is beyond any sickly sentimentality but hardheaded, softhearted good-will. Love is the word of selfless kindliness, God-touched concern. Real love is nobler and higher than other concerns. It goes on, despite barriers, doing its work, bearing its load, climbing its hill, and carrying its cross. It does not look for what it can get but what it can give. This kind of selfless, seeking goodwill is the essential element of good character. Love is the heartbeat of the Eternal. Love suggest that our hearts have been invaded by a desire to be aggressive, questing and seeking goodwill. We Can’t trust this kind of love because it is lasting, rugged, and endures the test.
Gardner C. Taylor, faith in the fire, wisdom for life., Page 29–30.
To be a Christian, one must possess faith, hope, and love. To miss one is to have missed them all; to have one is to have them all. They all depend on one another. We believe in God’s love; we hope for God’s love; and we love him for his love. Yet love is the greatest because it’s limits extend beyond the limits of faith and hope. We believe for ourselves in order to be justified. We hope for ourselves in order to receive what is promised. But we love not only for ourselves but also for others...

Quotations
“I submit to you today that, despite the American victory in the Cold War (for which we should all be grateful) and the collapse and disappearance of the Soviet Union, nothing has changed that would diminish the force or relevance of Solzhenitsyn’s words. The virtue we lack—and it is an indispensable virtue—is courage. And we must recover it. Our young men and women must regain it—not to defend us from a hostile foreign power armed with nuclear weapons, but to protect us from a far more dangerous foe, a truly deadly enemy: our own worst selves.”
From Article, Solzenitsyns Prophecy, Robert P. George is McCormick Professor of Jurisprudence and director of the James Madison Program in American Ideals and Institutions at Princeton University.
I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.
From Nelson Mandela, Mandela in His Own Words.
Did we in our own strength confide, Our striving would be losing; Were not the right Man on our side, The Man of God’s own choosing: Dost ask who that may be? Christ Jesus, it is He; Lord Sabaoth His Name, From age to age the same, And He must win the battle.
Martin Luther, A Mighty Fortress

Joshua 1:6-9
6 Be strong and courageous, for you shall cause this people to inherit the land that I swore to their fathers to give them. 7 Only be strong and very courageous, being careful to do according to all the law that Moses my servant commanded you. Do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may have good success wherever you go. 8 This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success. 9 Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go."
2 Corinthians 12:9-10
9 But he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. 10 For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong.
Isaiah 43:1-3
1But now thus says the LORD, he who created you, O Jacob, he who formed you, O Israel: “Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine. 2When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you. 3 For I am the LORD your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior.
Hebrews 13:1-6
1 Let brotherly love continue. 2 Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unawares. 3 Remember those who are in prison, as though in prison with them, and those who are mistreated, since you also are in the body. 4 Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled, for God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterous. 5 Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, "I will never leave you nor forsake you." 6 So we can confidently say, "The Lord is my helper; I will not fear; what can man do to me?"

Mark 12:28-31
28 And one of the scribes came up and heard them disputing with one another, and seeing that he answered them well, asked him, "Which commandment is the most important of all?" 29 Jesus answered, "The most important is, 'Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. 30 And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.' 31 The second is this: 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' There is no other commandment greater than these."
Luke 10:25-37 25
And behold, a lawyer stood up to put him to the test, saying, "Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?" 26 He said to him, "What is written in the Law? How do you read it?" 27 And he answered, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself." 28 And he said to him, "You have answered correctly; do this, and you will live." 29 But he, desiring to justify himself, said to Jesus, "And who is my neighbor?" 30 Jesus replied, "A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he fell among robbers, who stripped him and beat him and departed, leaving him half dead. 31 Now by chance a priest was going down that road, and when he saw him he passed by on the other side. 32 So likewise a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 33 But a Samaritan, as he journeyed, came to where he was, and when he saw him, he had compassion. 34 He went to him and bound up his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he set him on his own animal and brought him to an inn and took care of him. 35 And the next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper, saying, 'Take care of him, and whatever more you spend, I will repay you when I come back.' 36 Which of these three, do you think, proved to be a neighbor to the man who fell among the robbers?" 37 He said, "The one who showed him mercy." And Jesus said to him, "You go, and do likewise."

Scripture References
1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, 2 looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God. 3 Consider him who endured from sinners such hostility against himself, so that you may not grow weary or fainthearted. - Hebrews 12:1-3
21 For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps. 22 He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in his mouth. 23 When he was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten, but continued entrusting himself to him who judges justly. 24 He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed. 25 For you were straying like sheep, but have now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls. - 1 Peter 2:21-25

Over the last several years I have been asked, “Reid, what is it you are doing these days?” There is a short and a long answer to this question. The short answer is that I help strengthen and encourage churches, I share the gospel with students, and I help thoughtfully engage others with the good news in our current cultural moment. The longer answer? Well, my friends Ryan Baitzel and Steve Hawthorne from Emergence Church in NJ recently interviewed me related to that question. My wife thought the audio/video from this could be helpful in answering this question a little bit more, so here is a little of my story and what I am up to today.
Also, towards the end of the episode, Reid answers a very important question: Soccer or Wrestling?
